What actually counts as content?

A clip is not content until someone other than you has a reason to watch it. That distinction changes what you film.

There is a gap between filming something and making content, and most people who feel stuck are standing in it. They have footage. They post it. Nothing happens. The footage was fine — it just never answered the question a viewer silently asks.

The question is always the same

Why should I watch this?

Not why did you make it. Not why is it interesting to you. Why would a stranger, mid-scroll, thumb already moving, give you thirty seconds.

If you can answer that in one sentence before you film, you have content. If you cannot, you have a recording.

There are only a few honest answers

Almost everything that works is one of these:

  • It teaches something. The viewer leaves able to do or understand something they could not before.
  • It shows something they have not seen. Access, scale, process, a place, a thing being made.
  • It makes them feel recognised. They see their own experience described accurately and think: that is exactly it.
  • It entertains. It is funny, surprising, satisfying or tense.
  • It helps them decide. A comparison, a real opinion, an answer to a question they were already asking.

Most videos that fail are not bad. They are simply none of these.

Name the person, not the audience

"Everyone" is not an audience. "People interested in fashion" is barely better — it is a category, not a person.

Picture one specific person. Someone who has a particular problem, at a particular moment, for a particular reason. A video aimed at one real person tends to find thousands of them. A video aimed at everyone usually reaches no one, because it had to stay vague to include them all.

Specific beats broad, every time

"How to style an outfit" is a topic. "What to wear to a wedding when you will be standing outside for two hours" is a video.

The second is narrower and will do better, because it matches something a real person actually thought. Broad topics feel safer. Specific ones get watched.

The test before you film

Finish this sentence: This is for someone who ___, and by the end they will ___.

If both halves come easily, film it. If you are struggling, the problem is in the idea, and no amount of filming or editing will rescue it. That is good news — ideas are cheaper to fix than footage.
