Using trending sounds without losing your own voice
Trends are distribution, not content. Used well they carry your idea further; used badly they replace it.
Trends are genuinely useful. A sound or format that is circulating gives you reach you would not otherwise have, and a structure that already works.
The failure mode is subtle: the trend stops being a vehicle for your idea and becomes the idea. You end up with a feed of competent participation in other people's moments and nothing that is recognisably yours.
The test: what remains if you remove the trend?
Take the sound away, take the format away, and look at what is left. If there is still a point, an observation or something worth seeing, the trend was carrying your content.
If nothing is left, the trend was the content — and that video will be indistinguishable from thousands of others, including to the people deciding whether to follow you.
Early is worth much more than good
Trends have a short window. The same video posted in week one and week four performs completely differently, because by week four the audience has seen the format enough times to skip it.
If you are not going to be early, you need to add something — a genuinely different angle, a subject nobody applied it to. Late and ordinary is the worst combination.
Fit matters more than reach
A trend that does not suit your subject, your tone or your audience will reach people who then find nothing else of interest. Views arrive, nothing accumulates.
It is better to skip most trends than to participate in all of them. The ones that genuinely suit you are worth waiting for, and you will recognise them because the idea arrives instantly.
Check before you use a sound
Sounds carry context. A clip can come from something you would not want to be associated with, or already mean something specific to the people who recognise it.
A few seconds finding out where a sound comes from prevents the occasional expensive mistake.
Bend the format
The most effective trend participation usually changes something — applying the structure to an unexpected subject, or subverting the expected ending.
Exact reproduction is the least memorable option available, because the audience has already seen that video.
Trends cannot be a strategy
An account built entirely on trends is rebuilt from scratch every few weeks and owns nothing. When the trend stops working, so does the account.
Use them as an occasional accelerant for work that would exist anyway. The thing people follow you for has to be the thing that is yours.
Making content people feel understood by
The strongest reaction a short video gets is not admiration. It is recognition — the sense that someone described your exact experience.
Designing a video worth sharing
People do not share things because they are good. They share things that say something on their behalf.
Asking questions that actually get comments
Most calls to action fail because they are work. A good question is easy to answer, specific, and genuinely open.
